South Africa Trip Day 3 Tuesday 10th May Johannesburg/Rand

When we decided to go to South Africa,I sent emails out to the main airfields in the Joburg area namely Lanseria,Rand,Wonderboom and Grand Central of which the last two mentioned replied right away and we got a reply from Lanseria on the Friday before we departed on the Sunday,however no reply from Rand despite 4 emails and even a phone call some two weeks before departure.No problem we thought as Rand is only 30km from where we were staying so we thought we would drive there anyway and hope to get something sorted out for later in the week.Firstly we had to go to the airport to pick up our hire car and then it was a quick look from the viewing deck before driving to Rand.

Drove down to Rand arriving about midday and decided to have a drink before going to the airport manager's office,whilst doing this we logged one inbound to JNB:

We approached the offices which turned out to be the airport safety officer's office,I explained that I had sent several emails and had made a phone call from the UK as well and showed them the emails,the safety officer (Paul Roberts,an ex pat) was angry that the emails had not been passed over to him and couldn't apologise enough,we said no problem but could we arrange a tour for later in the week or early the following week before we fly to Cape Town.No problem he said and asked if we had reflective jackets with us (now an essential item for all airfields in South Africa),when we said yes he said OK we will do it now,so we left what stuff we didn't need locked in his office and off we went:
