Well the alarm went off at 04:15am (Oh my God that’s early) quick wash and cup of coffee- blue skies all around and to start the day two southbound hit the books both not trailing- D-AXGC A330 of Eurowings and CL605 C-FCSI. (Looking good for a good day how – went downhill from that point.) Then loaded up my hire car and was on the road for 05:15am- heading for my first stop at Luton on arrival the queue of traffic trying to get around the roundabout was ridiculous – and not a cop to be seen- eventually got into the Medium stay car park (opposite the Pond) where the free time has been reduced from 30 minutes to 15- so logged as much as I could- and drove round the nooks and crannies to get the other biz- went over to the long stay near Harrods where you now get an hour free parking which is great for getting the biz parked over there- a substantial log was obtained including at least three Chinese. Then back on the road M1 heading for the main reason for getting up at daft- o-clock Aero-Expo 2016 at Sywell arriving at 09:20am- the omens did not look good for the day as I was in the third lane of car parking to the right of the gate. The rest of the car park was empty. Anyway quick bite to eat- phone call to the Missus to tell her I had arrived safe and sound then over to the entrance to go into the event. Speaking to a guy at the event whose mate was a pilot- stating the rumours on the Friday were that this was going to be the last Aero-Expo at Sywell- with possibly Booker being a favoured choice. Wait and see on that one.
Anyway the static etc was poorly set out in my opinion -not a patch on last year albeit a few will have gone into the book and the weather had put a lot of visitors off- It was cold and windy- but just under 200 was logged by myself- stayed at the event until just before 13:00 when the short airshow was due to begin- brought forward. Also as the visitors were virtually nil at this point- and it had started to rain as I left. Won’t bore you with what was seen -as it has been covered in another post. After I left went my usual way back home via Husbands Bosworth where one glider entered the book and then onto EMA where I decided to go to the Aeropark where a few needed went into the book also- nice mound at the Aeropark with a bench for viewing the airport. Nothing of note at EMA apart from needed Atlantic 737 G-JMCR. Then it was back in the car through lot’s of heavy downpours on the motorway- getting back at Chez Solway (Yes my bungalow has a name) at 16:50- which pleased the wife. Then it was beer and footie until I was sent to bed as I was impersonating a nodding dog sat on the settee. Longish day- 400 mile round trip- my last until August when we go to the Countryfile Roadshow at Blenheim Palace. Maybe one more trip in addition to the LAA at Rallye at Sywell- before my hols- depending on what fixtures are televised. Happy Days Bob

Never too old Bob, although I can't do the there-and-back-in-a-day trips anymore. I set off early Tuesday caling in to Gloucester, Kemble (3 x HZ 747s plus the TF- one) and finally Bournmouth. Next morning was Blackbush, Farnborough and LHR. Three nights at the Ibis LHR with trips out to White Waltham and Denham. Saturday up to Sywell (low numbers this year) and overnight at Luton (made 40 !!). Waiting the WOW rush then back home to Manchester via Birmingham in time to cook the wife,s dinner and catch up with the housework before football. Living the dream.

Alan Alan- Looks like you had a great trip- would have liked to have done something like that myself- but work commitments do not allow- 65 and still grafting albeit part time- Was going to go to Kemble myself to get the Saudi lumps- but as we are going to Blenheim in a few weeks time will have a bit of a detour then. Next year will be cutting down ( God willing of course) on the early starts and doing a few overnighters just like I did at Pidley and Norwich earlier in the year. Popham already on the radar for next year as the Mighty Blues are away that weekend. Just going to do the ironing now before returning the hire car then a bit of shopping and hoovering then Iceland v France. Happy Days Bob

Oh hoovering! Yeah, that's less exciting. At least you got to aeroexpo. I had to give it a miss this time- things are a bit a tricky this year!
It's been said for a while that this will be the last time at Sywell. It's a shame- I can't think of an equal venue at an active airfield. Booker is ok and a lot closer for me, but not as good. Oh well!

Oh well! It is only a rumour but I wonder if Brexit may have anything to do with it! If it does move Kemble could also be an option. Or move it up north to Barton Oh well back to the ironing and hovering!!!!! Living the dream Bob

Not sure why but I doubt it's to do with Brexit. It was rumoured that it would be moving several months ago.
Who knows? Yes, Kemble is where I suggested when discussing it a while back. Great minds...

Agree with christoff from personal experience! Got to admit that I cannot now do what I used to do only a few years ago - but that is growing old!!! Haven't got the stamina needed any more for Farnborough or Fairford, so I have to rely on others reports - such is life!

Dave, Believe the following- G-AWHC-11+- Hispano HA.1112 (Think that was to the right of hangar as you looked at it) G-FXII- EN224Spitfire F.XII ML407-G-LFIX Spitfire Hispano HA.1112-M1L Buchon apparently US registered and dismantled plus a Hawker Sea Fury Plus the Spitfire which landed Cannot confirm if I saw any of the others will have to wait until the LAA. Mike I know what you mean re stamina- I seem to sit on the bed a lot longer in the morning before I get up and I am a youthful 65. But I am in training for the LAA Rallye and you need stamina for that Update on my work today:- Ironing, hovering, Lawn cut and weeding, made bed - took hire car back and shopping with the better half. Interesting about the rumours of Aero Expo returning to Booker because I was told at Booker the last time it was held there that the reason to go to Sywell was that Booker was too small and couldn't cope, having said that,Booker is only a 30-40 minute away.

Have to agree with Bob, I think this was the most disappointing of events. The weather deterred a lot of visitors and that is to be expected but the organisation is lazy and I get the feeling that the paying public are being ripped off to fund the event.
It's the same every year but yet again doors open at 10.00 to the public, but aircraft arriving from 08.00, hugely frustrating, leading to long queues. As mainly a photographer the way the visitors are parked is no use at all and you have to rely on aircraft exiting at the end of the runway and taxiing back in, very few did this, but my main gripe was the static 'display'. Volume well down on previous years leaving large areas of unused grass with many aircraft crammed in together at very close quarters. Having driven a 200 mile round trip, paid my £20 I left after a couple of hours. I too heard this is the last one at Sywell and that may have had something to do with the lazy set up, but I doubt very much I will bother again if is remains at Sywell.

I agree it was a rubbish exhibition with high entrance fee for one day. I was there Saturday with my wife and six year old grandson. Even he was not happy. The only people who were happy were the family who run it and the old fellow who said two years ago to the queue " it's my show and you will go in when I say so" ( he was there again on Saturday ). Last year we paid for our three day tickets on line and failed to get them until after several phone calls. On th LAASI site this year several members had the same hassle. We must be the mugs because the organising family are laughing all the way to the bank. At least my grandson enjoyed Luton then on Sunday on the way home we went to Shennington for the gliding competition and Wellesbourne these two fields made my grandson's day because we had air side access. Trev Hit the nail on the head Trev with your comments re the static- I thought everything was too close together and was of no real use for photo's- like wise with Les's comments- but on the plus side I made 54 new frames (85 in total) which was a result- but not a patch on last years event- I pre-booked my ticket online but as you say if you go on the day £20 each is a lot of money. My round trip was 400 miles which was very tiring and as I said in the initial thread- threw my hand in once it started to rain. Sort of Happy Days Bob
