Saw on another site that each visit to the BBF on every day has to be paid for replacing the ability to leave after the AM launch and return using the same ticket for the PM launch. I thought that was the case anyway- but apparently you used to be able to use the same parking ticket for multiple visits during a day. Bob

Anyone going to Bristol this weekend?
Think I'm only doing Saturday this year, but hopefully AM and PM weather permitting! Maybe Lulsgate, Haleland, Dunkeswell, Exeter in between if time allows...

By the way, thanks Filair! I've been nagging my mate, asking him what day we were going, what time he was getting here... Now I realise why he hadn't really considered it all yet! But I would have been wondering why he hadn't turned up on time...

I am considering going for the Balloon meet. I have booked into Premier Inn at Portishead on Friday so will do Friday pm & Saturday am. Does anyone know of any good places for views outside the event. The last 2 times I have been I have in very long queue's to get out.

If you park in the car park (field) in Long Ashton, rather than in Ashton Court itself, you can usually get out pretty quick. Especially going back to Portishead- you'll avoid all the city traffic.
It costs a fiver to park there, but I do it every year and have no problems. The morning launches are much quieter for traffic anyway - if you leave straight after the launch, you'll probably get straight out.

Depending on the wind direction,Durdham Downs can be good, from Portishead, cross the Suspension Bridge and go left,at the main road near the Zoo go straight across onto the Downs.(North/North East wind direction) If you only want to watch the launches, don't go into Ashton Court, nightmare traffic as you have found out. If the Balloons are going in an Easterly or Southern direction the A38 Bedminster Down is very good but it gets busy. I have found that the carpark near the Bristol City ground in Winterstoke Road is good for most lift offs except Northerly and Westerly ones. If they happen to go in a Westerly direction they will come towards Portishead. I hope all this is not too confusing.

Further to my last post,The A38 Bridgwater Road Bedminster Down will give views regardless of which way the Balloons go.but it is a couple of miles from Ashton Court,on slightly higher ground. If you take photo's you will probably need at least a 300mm lens. A lot of grass parking as well, but it does get busy.

Another point is, how important is it to you to see everything? If you view from outside (perhaps with the exception of Filair's last position) you run the risk of missing anything that only tethers.
At most mass launches there will be at least a couple that inflate but don't fly. You'll probably only see everything from the launch site. But if that's not important, then disregard...

Thanks for that, the car park at Long Ashton looks very good so will probably try that. I believe that it is free to enter the event on foot.

It looks like there will be some serious road closures around the site from Thursday onwards. I would suggest a search for Balloon Fiesta road closures, and maybe a map of the area. It may involve quite a detour to get to Long Ashton. I have seen a local cricket club advertising £5 parking,it is on the main road from Portishead, but about a mile walk to the site Best of luck anyway.

Thanks Filair
I had a quick look at this - it appears some of the closures only take place from 7pm. Which firstly, means morning launches would be unaffected. Secondly, it would mean you can get into the car parks as usual but there may be detours on the way out. It's hard to work out what these would involve, but it happens every year to a degree. However, it does look worse this year.
But it isn't entirely clear and I would urge people to check for themselves rather than trust me- I was ready to go last week until Filair pointed out the correct date!!! I'll check with someone who will be down there on Thursday and see what they say.
