After SKY router decided to play silly buggers this morning Ive just spend an hour on the phone ti technical support, actually the guy was very good and after we had messed with settings his end and mine we finally got me back online :-) The reason ,and the reason Im posting this, was because the problem eventually turned out to be the microfiche ( the small box that plugs into the telephone point) the guy asked me how old it was, as a guess I said 2 years as this was when i moved in, his reply ...... They are only really good for a year!!!! Luckily I had a spare :-) all now running again
So the question is, how old is your microfiche :-) lol

Jeff,
I had the self same problem a couple of weeks ago, did they have you unscrewing the wall socket to try your connection in the 'BT' test socket!!! That was a barrel of laughs!!
Anyway, long story cut short, they sent a new connector for me - I then had a further problem so they sent two more for the extension sockets around the house...
Touch wood they have been fine since then... They also had me switch channels to get better speed on he broadband channel - don't ask me how, I just followed their instructions over the phone (didn't write anything down) and can't remember how to do it now!!!
Anyway, think the problem is quite common...

Is it just Sky Routers that have these things Jeff, we're on BT Infinity, do their routers have one too?

We had those plugged in to our various phone sockets when we were on Tiscali but don't have them with BT.

I had problems last year that went on for months. I was on the phone to Sky regularly,I found out lots of technical terms, and everyone I spoke to had a different solution. I was sent new splitters,a new router but nothing cured it. Eventually a BT engineer came and he had to visit the local exchange to fix it. Touch wood, everything is fine now,but what a nightmare.

I have had many a run in with BT and believe me the ONLY thing they fully confirmed is that they are a bunch of w*nk*rs. I had a connection problem when it rained, so after a couple of calls they said it was the router, so I bought a new one, needless to say the problems coninued.Several more calls and I explained the router was kept indoors & didn't get wet when it rained and I wasn't going to buy a new one after every cloudburst. The problem always returned when it rained, so I suggested the cables must be affected by water in the trunking, they assured me the cable wasn't the problem as it did NOT go underground, to which I answered ,if they would care to send an 'engineer' round I would show them where the cable didn't go into the ground at the base of the telegraph pole opposite, and where it didn't come out of the ground at their junction box at the end of our (short-ish) road. I changed ISP assuming that as a commercial user (of BT'S cables) the ISP would have more 'clout' than I, and B.T. would get it sorted.... this 'appears' to have happened.

Our BT Infinity router is odd Terry. It sits on a small shelf in our hallway adjacent to the tephone socket. The wi-fi signal in the dining room, a mere six feet away is crap, whereas I can sit outside in the garden with my laptop, 30 or 40 ft away and get a superb signal. Other than that, so far, BT has been pretty good. Certainly 20 times better than Tiscali.
