With a 04.00 arrival at San Francisco pilot station, I had hoped to see the Golden Gate Bridge but 50mph winds and driving rain put paid to that. Port was closed so we had to anchor in the bay midway between SFO and OAK but with the cloud base generally between 700-1000ft occasionally rising to 1500ft even with the SBS, good binoculars and an obliging Captain who allowed me to set up on the bridge and run in and out onto the wings I missed a lot more than seen.
Having asked for a hotel close to SFO I ended up at the Waterfront in Alemeda, the right room and good weather would have been OK but I didn't get that!!
The rain was still falling next morning when arrived at SFO after long car ride round the bay, (boy it would be nice if the conversations were about anything but the blonde bimbo in charge of the free world!) which was actually a benefit as only 28L & R were in use and all arrivals and most departures can be seen from the AFKLM lounge and I had no problem using SBS or binoculars.
Flight back was first on B787, most impressed, I enjoyed the A350 with Finnair but the overall product with KLM was much better, seats did not feel quite so claustrophobic, though the choices on the IFE do not match that of some airlines.
On to the logs,
SBS was from 06.00-18.00 in San Francisco Bay and included everything I manage to put into the book which was probably about 30% or less of actual movements
SFO was every movement I noted between 11.30-14.00 from the AFKLM lounge
AMS was just the more interesting movements.
