Weather was awful which was why there was nothing happening. No Grobs parked outside the hangar either, waited in the car for 40 minutes and apart from an Apache which departed way out across the field and was unID-able, there was just one movement, AS350 ZJ246 which just happened to be my last AS350 based at Middle Wallop, so dead chuffed with that IMG_2193 by brownieboy27, on Flickr

Hi Bob
I always park in the museum car park, and then walk up the side of the museum with the perimeter fence to my right to the kids' play area. This looks across where the Grobs are "usually" parked in front of one of the large hangars. If no one's about I can stand on the picnic table which allows me to shoot over the fence. I have to say I've never found an ideal place to watch proceedings at MW although with the wind usually from the south or southwest, whatever choppers take off "usually" ( I like that word...) come right across the car park.
You can also grab a table on the terrace of the cafe which overlooks the play area and would be a good location for seeing across the fence, a bit exposed though on a cold day.

Yes the museum car park is probably best for viewing, and as Graham says, the stairs and terrace of the museum cafe are probably best. Not sure if Grobs are out at the weekend at Middle Wallop- but if they are out you will see them from around here. You can also walk along the road back towards the hangars for some better views- there may be some Lynx cabs outside the hangars, but might be difficult to ID unless complete.
Southside there is a road that runs close to the perimeter. A track up to a crash gate usually gives views of some of the helis, and enables you to read off the Bell 212s if they're out (weekdays!)
Also here is (or was) a Lynx cab on the dump. (Possibly XZ181 but can't remember for sure)
There are also the many gate guards, and on the other side of the A343 is XX392 Gazelle at Army HQ

Yes some places do fly them at weekends- the 2 you mention plus Boscombe Down for example. Some others such as Cosford don't seem to- I'm sure some clever person on here will know why...

Thanks for the tips ZZ, I think there are 4(?) gate guards at MW plus the one at the HQ as you say.
