The third & final part of my report on my Stateside trip earlier this year takes in the 2 major airports we visited. We also did a few smaller fields but whilst we were granted access at most they wanted to remain private so the photo's are not being put on Flikr. Atlanta was brilliant. The action is right in front of the hotel, easily seen from the balcony outside the room. Heat haze does become a problem although I could read most stuff off using my 'Mighty Midget' scope with 16 - 45 zoom eyepiece. 2 Runways are right in front of the hotel. one landing and one take off. And 3 more on the far side of the terminals. At Tampa we stayed at the Marriot Hotel that is connected to the terminal. The room I had looked out over the eastern runway with a lot of stuff using the western one. I looked out onto the Southwest AL terminal. They are a fairly new airline at Tampa but very busy, very few aircraft came in twice. Most other American airlines come in at least once a day. Spotting was very good from the roof of the multi-story carpark accessed from the terminal & no one bothered us whilst we where up there. Heat haze was again a problem but most aircraft including the many bizjets on the far side could be read off with a little perciverance. I was present at different times on 4th to 8th April with a full day on the 6th and a full morning on the 8th before flying back to Atlanta. The photo's are not in any date order. Fabulous selection of shots there Graham and so good to see the Eastern 737, the logo seems hardly to have changed in more than 45 years. Myself and two friends on here did a Washington trip way back in 1972 and Eastern were one of the major players at what was then National Airport. Checking those old logs, we saw 34 B727s, 39 DC-9s and 11 L-188s. Good days.

The Eastern AL that is flying now has little to with the old airline of that title. The Group that now runs the airline bought the 'Interlectual Property' according to Wikipedia, which included the IATA & ICAO codes. And obviously the right to use the old scheme. Very nice to see though. I remember DC-10's at Gatwick & 727 /DC-9's at Montreal in the 80's.

Yes I can remember that Washington trip well and I love that Eastern scheme too. I saw many more at Miami in 1980 including L1011 and A300, and I flew to Freeport on one of the A300s while we were there
