Friday 15th September 2017
Well, here we are again for another bash.
This time we ran into rain about 14.30 - just West of Cambridge - and it continued (some was light and quite a bit was heavy) until 19.00. John's Field is somewhat wet!!
Visitors present on arrival:- 62-3503 KC-135R 465ARS/AFRC......"Tinker" tailband 62-4138/OF RC-135V 55WG 64-14874/OF RC-135U 55WG 84-0185 KC-10A 60AMW.............."Travis" tail band
Departures 16.37BST "CLEAN81" 84-0185
Well at least the KC-10 stayed around long enough for me to see it!! The needed Fairchild KC-135R (63-8000) departed early-ish this morning.
Apparently 68AS/AFRC C-5M 86-0023 (not needed) visited this morning and departed to Ramstein.

Pretty typical Saturday. One visitor in and out and that was it, apart from RC-135V 62-4138/OF doing a mission as "BUMBO98".

Sunday 17th September 2017
Fog through the night and up until about 11.00. Didn't stop "QUID822" KC-135R 58-0100 and "CRICK48" RC-135U 64-14847/OF taking off for a mission around 05.00, though. The QUID had to divert into Brize Norton once it had done its refuelling bit. Both landed back at the 'Hall during the afternoon.
Otherwise, a very quiet Sunday with only (the predictable) yesterday's KC-10A back from Ramstein.
Arrival 14.00BST "RCH706" 85-0027 KC-10A 305AMW......."McGuire" tail band
Departure 16.44BST "RCH706" 85-0027

I have certainly see better weekdays than this!!!
Arrivals 09.38BST "STRONG61" ??-?/LN F-15E 48FW )...............ILS approach "STRONG62" ??-?/LN F-15E 48FW ) 10.51BST "RCH975" 59-1515 KC-135R 92ARW.............."Fairchild" fintip band 13.25BST "RCH326" 04-4136 C-17A 305AMW.............."McGuire" tail band
Departure 09.00BST "FAF6444" E128/705-TM
Other than this, it was all based stuff. "QUID21" did the Rota detachment change-over with 58-0100 going out (after a refuelling session) and 60-0324 returning. Five other KC-135s bashed the circuit. Three CV-22Bs returned from a fortnight's deployment to Denmark ("LOUD41/42/43" 08-0050/12-0063/12-0064) along with their MC-130J ("BLOND41" 13-5778).
Lakenheath was rather subdued with only 11 launches during the period 08.00 - 09.00 and a mere 6 during 13.05 - 13.10.

Foggy to start with, but cleared by around 10.30. Then, ummm..........
Departure 10.36BST "COBRA55" 64-14847
Lakenheath managed all of 10 launches during 10.55 - 11.09.
Missed my one chance of a pot with "GAF193" A.400M 54+10 routing CPT > REDFA - could not spot the small trail from here.
All in all, not a day to remember.
"NACHO" TDY KC-135R changeover tomorrow, so a remote chance that I might make something.

However, just to be kind to me "RCH476" C-17A 08-8201 routed DIKAS > MAM (at 10.35) > NAVPI at FL330 to give a pot for the day.
Then, this evening, we went down to the Spice Lounge in Mildenhall to have a nice Indian meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Better Friday than some!!
Woke up to find my first pot was already on the deck!! Caught sight of it out the shower room window (best view down Pollards Lane - nothing smutty!!) as it took off.
Part way through the morning "STRIX23" caused chaos as it was performing paradropping over the airfield and nothing could take-off or land until it had finished. With the cloudbase being rather low (rain), it took a long time to make up its mind as to what height it was finally going to drop at (eventually reduced to 6,000 feet). Then it messed about waiting for the right wind. This resulted in a stream take-off by 4 KC-135s and a 5th cancelled as its receivers could not accommodate its delayed take-off.
The P-8A came down from Lossiemouth to land, taxi slowly back round to the other end and take-off again. Just as well that it had to hold for the paradropping as it had not got a PPR number (Prior Permission Required) for landing and that had to be sorted.
Arrivals 07.08BST "RCH375" 84-0079 C-21A 357AS..................returning to CONUS after a 16-month deployment "out East" 08.17BST "SNOOP55" 62-4132/OF RC-135W 55WG................the new TDY machine 09.54BST "CWL79" ZK455/O Beech 200 45 Sqdn.............ILS approaches 11.57BST "LANCR50" 168763/LD P-8A VP-10 15.34BST "GOLD12" 83-0080 KC-10A 60AMW.............."Travis" tail band 15.40BST "GOLD11" 82-0193 KC-10A 60AMW.............."Travis" tail band
Departures 08.19BST "RCH953" 60-0357 08.34BST "RCH375" 84-0079 08.46BST "RCH807" 60-0365 12.21BST "LANCR50" 168763/LD
Lakenheath did nothing all day. They were probably getting ready for the weekend's onslaught and for the return of the 492FS from "the sandpit".

The deployment went off with two drop-outs again. The real stars of the day were the two VP-46 P-3Cs that arrived shortly after we got back from seeing the "SJ" F-15s.

Most databases show hex [AE1D71] as being 162770, but this is probably down to a mis-coded box at Mildenhall in December 2014. It is correctly 162318.
Departures 09.57BST "RCH797" 00-0177 19.32BST "RCH980" 79-0433
Rather a nice day for the spreadsheets - making a KC-135, too.
Tomorrow should, in theory, see the 1st lot of "SJs" off to the sandpit and (hopefully) the 1st lot of 492FS back to Lakenheath.

The only reason for increased heart rates today was "CLEAN08" calling an IFE (had control problems) not too long into its mission. Had a Typhoon divert to come to inspect it and report what anomalies it could see. Eventually landed safely.

Lakenheath was absolutely heaving - and that is an understatement - with spotters/photographers. I have never seen the field opposite the road down to the viewers car park being used for parking before - including by the local (Mildenhall based) Suffolk Police. They were their usual happy-go-lucky selves, laughing and joking with the spotters/photographers, offering advice on where (and where not) to park, etc - just keeping an eye on things to make sure nothing got out of hand and that everyone was sensible. A credit to the Force , guys.
