Three very nice visitors graced the two bases this morning.
Two Aviano-based F-16Cs of 510FS "Buzzards" dropped into Lakenheath on their way to Lossiemouth. They should have refuelled with "QUID900", but that had problems and cancelled the AAR.
Then, a P-3SPA of VPU-2 dropped into Mildenhall for a nightstop. Sadly, it is extremely unlikely that we will ever find out the true identity of this, as the unit disguises their aircraft to appear to be normal P-3s (including using the correct hex code for its assumed identity) - without wearing any serial.

A day of heavies into Lakenheath. Mildenhall was shut for 2 hours for barrier certification. One of the local "QID" KC-135s had to divert to Lakenheath because the cross-winds were out of limits (210 at 22, gusting to 28).

Good to see Mark & Co again. Shame the Raptors were not more forthcoming - only two out (09-4172 and 08-4154) and made one flight each (as "SPAD41/42")!!

Lakenheath Departures 06.42BST "RCH255" 83-0076 10.15BST "QID43" 58-0094 12.42BST "RCH787" 07-7181..............but immediately diverted to Mildenhall after failure of the navigation equipment
The day was saved for me by an obliging "RCH167" C-17A 96-0006 of 167AS/West Virginia ANG routing DIKAS > MAM (at 09.01) > NAVPI at FL370. I didn't need the other three that showed themselves.
I did, however, miss "BONE01" B-1B 86-0105 which routed over MAM both outbound and inbound - heard it when inbound.

Thank you, Mark. I intend to. This is the last caravan trip for me this year, so any further visits come under the "emergency visit" classification and we will stay at the Travelodge.

Not a lot to be said about today, other than that two of the F-22As went off to Spangdahlem AB, Germany to conduct local air training.

Sunday 15th October 2017
The remaining 6 Lakenheath F-15Es returned from the sandpit this morning. Obviously they were not going to wait for the last of of SJs to make their way down there.
The MDA Gulfstream IIs flew a mission each today. This was supposed to be their last and they will be off home soon.
Mildenhall Arrivals 10.16BST "RCH742" 59-1480 KC-135T 6AMW 13.26BST "RCH333" 85-0034 KC-10A 305AMW 18.1?BST "GOLD82" 61-0288 KC-135R 100ARW........back from tanking 5 x EA18Gs between Lajes AB, Azores and Moron AB, Spain
Departure 13.26BST "RCH333" 85-0034
Lakenheath Unusually for a Sunday (Quiet Hours), the circuit was open for the returning F-15s to do a run-and-break - as a 4-ship and a 2-ship.
Arrivals 10.58BST "MAZDA71" 97-0221/LN b F-15E 494FS 10.58BST "MAZDA72" 91-0308/LN b F-15E 494FS 10.58BST "MAZDA73" 91-0332/LN b F-15E 494FS

11.00BST "MAZDA76" 98-0133/LN b F-15E 494FS
That now brings me down to needing just two LN F-15s - 98-0132 (currently in WR-ALC for rework) and 00-3000 (not noted since 26th July). I've updated the entry for 4th October to identify the two unknowns.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow for the F-22s - watch for tanker(s) approaching Sicily from the SE, then add 2hr 20min for arrival.

Monday 16th October 2017 Three of the SJ F-15s (along with their KC-10) departed in the dark just before 06.00. The reheats looked fantastic as they climbed away from Lakenheath.
The expected 2nd lot of F-22s were a "no show" - not really surprising given the forecast effects of Ophelia - and will hopefully turn up tomorrow.
Two F-22s were supposed to be going to Powidz AB, Poland (with KC-135), but their tanker had problems with its flight plan and went back to its parking spot. The poor F-22s ended up doing a 12min local handling sortie.

Did it rain today!!! At least it had stopped by the time that the final two SJ F-15s turned up.
Mildenhall launched 10 different based KC-135s at one time or another today - AND borrowed one of the visitors!! Main culprit was a pair of B-52s on a GP mission to the Cornfield range in Holland - and back.

Friday 20th October 2017 Depressingly wet weather this morning. Couldn't see the Lakenheath take-offs, which meant that I missed out on one of my last two based F-15s.

(Storm) Brian put paid to just about everything today - just one successful movement!!
This morning, KC-135s CLEAN97 and CLEAN99 declared the crosswind gusts to be out of limits (210, 22 gusting 29) and taxied back to their parking spots, thus stopping the final 3 SJ F-15s departing.
RCH977 (the departing NACHO) decided to abandon at the same time, too, because of the wind.
GOLD42 KC-135T 58-0071 of 22ARW abandoned its approach due to the wind (210, 22 gusting 35) and diverted to Prestwick this afternoon.

Sunday 22nd October 2017
Wind was still quite strong for most of the day before dropping off for the evening, but the temperature had dropped several degrees - so it felt bl***y cold in the wind.
RAPCON (Radar Approach Control) at Lakenheath suffered a power outage overnight and didn't come back up until about 16.00. This meant that anything landing/taking off before then had to assume responsibility for flying outside radar coverage between Mildenhall Tower and Eastern ICF coverage - only about 10 miles.
Arrival 13.31BST "RCH683" 79-0433 KC-10A 305AMW......."McGuire" tail band......(again!!) 22.??BST "ENVY31" 162784 E-6B VQ-4..........back from its mission

The last three SJ F-15s should be departing tomorrow with CLEAN99.
We are staying up here a few more nights and will be back home Thursday at the latest.

Hectic period early this morning with the ANG change-over beginning.......just hope some decent ones come back through here and not Ramstein.
New Machine for 100ARW arrived. It was previously based here up to 2014.
Once more, the SJs failed to depart - tanker problem (again)

Yes!! The last three SJ F-15Es finally made it away towards the sandpit - and with their original tanker. Mind you, 100ARW had one standing by, just in case!!
Nice visit from one of the two rarer Wiesbaden UC-35As.

Thursday 26th October 2017
A rather dreary day brightened up by the Hickam-based C-17A and then two C-5s into Lakenheath. The E-6B flew a mission and we had a stream take-off by 4 based tankers (and the ensuing circuit bashing on their return).

Sunday 29th October 2017
Not a very inspiring day.
Arrival 14.01Z "RCH161" 85-0034 KC-10A 305AMW......"McGuire" tailband
Departures 09.15Z "RCH424" 59-1500 09.49Z "BASSE67" 162784 10.23Z "GOLD68" 58-0054 10.53Z "RCH328" 59-1505 17.16Z "RCH161" 85-0034
Which leaves us with just the TDY RC-135W 62-4132/OF as being the only visitor.
Going home tomorrow (early lunchtime) - just hope that I can make something tomorrow morning. I'm on 79 for the trip, so I'm not grumbling.

Monday 30th October 2017
Only two visitor movements before I left - and that was it for the day apparently.....and I needed one of them.
Arrivals 07.10Z "TUAF807" 16-0055 A.400M Turkish AF. 10.32Z "RCH462" 63-8000 KC-135R 92ARW
Well that is it from my visit. A total of 80 made, which I am really pleased about

US Navy (9) E-6B....................1 KC-130J...............1 P-3C....................6 P-3SPA...............(1).....will never find out its serial P-8A....................1
RAF (4) Apache.................2 Tornado................1 Typhoon...............1
Other Air Forces (4) French AF.............3 Lithuanian AF........1
Well, we left at 12.10 and got back to the caravan storage place at 16.10 (only 10min of breaks) - which must be a record with the caravan in tow.
That is it for my caravan stays up in John's Field for this year. Any further trips up there will be "emergency" trips and we will stay in the Travelodge at the Fiveways Roundabout (Barton Mills). Next caravan stay will most likely be in the 1st week in April, i.e. just after Easter.
I hope you have enjoyed reading the logs of all the visitors at the two bases. It has certainly been enjoyable for me to see them.
