Loved the Deltics. I clearly remember an old spotting trip to London when I was certainly no older than 12 or 13, going to Kings Cross for the first time and seeing these huge monsters at work. I used the Ian Allen "Combined" spotters book and it felt great being able to underline the 7 or 8 I saw there over a couple of hours.

Remember seeing the original (prototype) "Deltic" operating out of Euston in the late '50s.
Wiki says that it went to the Science Museum (now elsewhere) after it was withdrawn, but I have a vague recollection of seeing it at the Clapham museum. Am I right, anyone?

Hi Bob
I grew up in Battersea and the park was my playground as a kid. It was a 2 mile walk to the museums at South Ken. The Science Museum was always my favourite and the Deltic was there - early 60's along with a GWR Castle - can't remember which one.
The one you are probably thinking of was at the Clapham Museum which was Mallard - the record breaking A4 Pacific. Clapham was an old LT bus garage that became a museum - I don't know when - we'd need to Google it.
All I can remember as a kid growing up in central London was train spotting at my local Clapham Junction - I lived by the line - Old Oak Common, Stratford, Cricklewood and Kings Cross for the Deltics.
When the final steamers left Waterloo in 1967 my interest (along with about 20 of us) moved to the downstairs circular viewing area in what I think was the Queens Building
Happy days Keith
