This is a report from my trip to Taiwan, Hong Kong Brisbane and Sydney. We were going to Taichung for my sons wedding and thought that we would make a holiday of it by dropping down to Sydney and visiting my nephew. (Also catching a bit of Ashes cricket at the Gabba)
At about 1130 on Wednesday, 8 November, we left Heathrow on B-KQI Boeing B.777 367ER of Cathay Pacific for our eleven and a half hour flight to Hong Kong, arriving at about 7am local time.
We had a stop over of and hour at Hong Kong before getting our connecting flight to Taoyuan airport Taipei
During the stop over the following were logged from the brilliant airside terminal before taking B-HSM Airbus A320 of Cathay Dragon for the 1 hour 15 min flight to Taipei.

Whilst in Taipei we did the touristy stuff including going up Taipei 101 ( Until recently was the tallest building in the world.) From the top of here you could see the city airport of Songshan. Taoyuan is like Heathrow on the outskirts of the city. But with the assistance of Plane finder play back saw the following take off/land at Songshan.
Friday, 10 November, 2017 Songshan Taipei
B-17007 Avions de Transport Regional ATR 72 212A (600) 1111 Uni Air
B-18663 Boeing B.737NG 800 61772 China Airlines
B-6698 Boeing B.737NG 89P 41489 Shanghai Airlines
During a bit of downtime I thought I would pay a visit to Songshan itself which happened to be a few stops along the metro. I knew there was viewing area however I got there about 8am to find it didn’t open until 9! Bugger. The weather this day was a bit gloomy but very humid so I grabbed a Maccy D’s brekkie from an ajoining street before doing a bit of spotting from the top of a multi storey car park. The Police actually arrived in a car whilst I was there. My heart started pounding but it transpired they were having a meal break and actually just acknowledged and nodded at me.
At 9 I made my way to the free viewing terrace accessed through the terminal and spent a few hours here. Fortunately the area is covered as the weather was pretty poor. There is a coffee shop here and toilets.
As you would expect its quieter than Taoyuan, but there is stuff here you wouldn’t find at Taipei,s main airport (Bit like London City to Heathrow) There was a military presence but a lot of it went unidentified as with the biz jets as they were face on rendering them unidentifiable.
This is what I did identify. The Tans Asia ATR,s are stored I think

We caught the bullet train to Taichung (Probably Taiwan's second city) for the wedding and stayed here and in the mountains (Alishan) for the next week or so.
During this time in the Campaign Memorial Park next to our apartment in Taichung, were a number of tanks and two fighter jets :- 4193 Lockheed F-104 Starfighter TF-104G 5775 Republic of China Air Force and 5283 Northrop F-5 Tiger II F-5E VG.1010 Republic of China Air Force.
Totally amazed by this and not aware until I stumbled on them when walking through the park.
Craving for some western food, on Saturday, 18 November we left Taichung for our trip to Sydney. We caught B-LCJ Airbus A320 of Hong Kong Express for our short hop to Hong Kong and our connecting flight.
The following were logged at Taichung International. Again its not the busiest, but a lovely little airport. (For comfort and ease probably the best we encountered on our trip.)The terminal is probably the size of Luton without the Biz. You could see the aircraft at the gates, but not the runways. The views are not great because they taxi out of sight. However when we taxied out, the vastness of the airport was seen and a large military airfield was attached. You could not see this from the terminal
There were loads of military fighter jets in the covered bunkers. None were identified. The only thing I did identify was 2722 a stored 727 of the Republic of China Air Force. (Found this out through a Google search) Saw this as we taxied in a corner of the airfield.
Hong Kong Express were fine as a “No Frills” Airline and similar in service to Easy Jet and Ryan Air.
Incidentally there are a massive amount of flights between Taiwan and Hong Kong. We did four trips on this route and every single one was full to the rafters. China Airlines use a variety of aircraft on this route including A 350's and 747's. Cathay use their A350's as well. Having seen Eva at Hong Kong, although not witnessed, I suspect they do likewise. Quite formidable load factors considering the political situation between Taiwan and mainland China.

We departed about 10pm for the 9 hour slog on B-LAE Airbus A330 of Cathay Pacific Airways, arriving at Sydney around 7am Local time.

If your out that way Taiwan is a great place (Although the food is a bit iffy, my personal opinion of course.) The people are really friendly and in my opinion much more so than the hoards of Chinese visitors who I found rude and generally horrible.
Will definitely return one day.
I will post the Oz part of the trip later.
Hopefully an insight to spotting over there and if anyone wants any info please feel free to contact me.

So we were at Hong Kong for a couple of hours and despite it being dark, I logged a few and after a tasty western meal and a few beers we took our flight to Sydney.

Regards Mick
