The flying time to Washington was a little over two hours and we landed at the "C" gates,we found spotting here difficult because of lack of windows and where there were windows, they were small,we decided to check out the "A" & "B" gates where the international flights arrive and also where the United Express aircraft park,we caught the underground train to this area and found an elevated section which also afforded some views of the GA area, this is what we logged before it got dark:

To get back to the "C" & "D" gates we opted to use one of the people carriers that were being used when I first visited the States in 1972,a guy on one of the information desks had told us that only a handful of the originals are still in use and that they had been re-designed to carry more people,I must admit (Graham) that the memories came flooding back as we moved down the taxiways between the two piers.
We had something to eat & drink and then moved down to our departure gate.We were on UA924 (A B787-8) and I even watched the crew get on board, about 30 mins before boarding time they announced that there was a problem with the plane and updates would be given, this went on until about 1.5 hours after planned departure time when they finally announced that the flight was cancelled and so we all trooped off to the customer service desk,by the time that we got to the desk and were seen another two hours had passed but we managed to get on the first departure to Heathrow the following morning, now call me a cynic but I believe that they combined two flights together as our original one only had about 100 people on it and everyone who wanted to got on the next flight. We didn't take up United's offer of a hotel room so instead they gave us a pillow, blanket,a bag of toiletries and $20 of food vouchers,we later found out that those people at the back of the queue had only 3 hours @ the hotel before they had to return to the airport.Thankfully Dulles is dead @ night so nothing to disturb the sleep patterns.
Part 16 to follow.
