February, Shrove Tuesday, Valentines' Day and across the Pond, Presidents' Day. Apart from that, lockdown still in force, many of us on furlough and dreams of foreign holidays, live music. a visit to the boozer and air shows still very much on hold. 9.5 million COVID jabs administered, 50 million to go then it's round two for those not fortunate enough to have been given the one shot vaccine.
Collective chins up folks, one day we'll all look back and laugh about this........

Hi Folks,
My first of the month today;
D-AIEF A321N Lufthansa coming out of LHR at 09.56, strange Dover departure, came as far south as Guildford before turning to Dover.
Heard the UR- AN-12 which went right over the top of me, sadly obscured by the darn cloud...
I’m probably about to say, what we are all feeling, I need either some good (clear) weather or a few days out for a road ‘spotting’ trip, I’d be delighted with either.... In a few minutes I’ll wake up from this pipe dream....
On a personal note, what a sad piece of news this afternoon. Dear old Captain Tom Moore passing away... RIP Sir.
Have a great evening chaps.
Bill

Russ, that Hunter is a regular in the skies here in Wiltshire, like you, always great to see one buzzing past The only question is what one counts it as. It's connection to XE688 appears to consist solely of one or both of its main landing gears which was marked with the c/n of XE688. XE688 was written off as beyond economic repair back in 1957 but was clearly not so badly damaged as it was sent to 5MU at Kemble who kept it in store as a spares source until sold for scrap to the famous Coley's yard in 1961. Some reports say that the c/n was found on the nose gear of the current aircraft but this seems possibly incorrect. Either way, the main part of the current Hunter undoubtedly comes from XE704 which Hawkers acquired from the technical school at Halton for onward sale to Chile where, after its active service ended, it was relegated to a ground instruction frame until acquired by Embraer as their chase plane as PP-XHH. I noted her at a Dunsfold open day in 1973 being prepared for sale to Chile with a purpose built two seat forward fuselage since XE704 (and XE688 for that matter) were single seaters. Many of the original single seat forward fuselages discarded by Hawkers during the 2 seat conversion program were then sold to Coleys yard in Hounslow along with several virtually complete ex RAF aircraft that had been robbed of anything useful. I logged 20 virtually complete frames there in 1962 and a further 11 in 1965 on trips round their yard. It is not inconceivable that while at Kemble the landing gear of XE688 was fitted by 5MU to XE704 during overhaul or repair of the latter. It probably also has at least one wing from yet another Hunter as one wing was destroyed in Chilean service when it clobbered a ground vehicle on landing and lost about a third of the wing (yet did a go around before eventually landing safely). When HHA acquired it from Embraer I guess that they had to give it some form of serial and seemingly opted for XE688, based presumably on the landing gear c/n. It should, I think, really have been allocated XE704 or a new serial as was the case when XL605 returned from the Saudi AF and was allocated new serial XX467. Hunter parts were often interchanged, particularly rear fuselages. G-APUX was a prime example of a bits of this & bits of that frame, being purpose built by Hawkers as a demonstrator using the centre and rear fuselage of ex Belgian Hunter IF-19, the wings and tail of IF-67 and the engine and other bits from XF378 and fitted with a new purpose built 2 seater forward fuselage. She also eventually went to Chile and, having seen it as G-APUX at Farnborough way back when, I saw her as J-718 at the Chile AF museum in Santiago when I was there in 2019 (got chatting to the Director and ended up with an all areas tour including the storage hangar and outside wooded store area, logging 6 Hunters in the process).

Dave, Not doubt all of this info is 100% accurate... But, could you be a little more explicit!!! 😂😂😂 Somebody, somewhere, would pay a helluva lot of money for your information library... Great post mate. Bill

C118 53-3245 was sadly broken up in Arizona yesterday (3 February 2021). Delivered to the USAF on 13 January 1955, I first saw her at Mildenhall back in 1963. She was subsequently converted to an EC118 to serve with the 5041st Tactical Operations Squadron of the Alaskan Air Command with a fixed call sign of Gaze 76 and with dayglow markings applied. Her final flight was on 22 April 1975 when she flew from Elmendorf, Alaska to Davis Monthan to be stored at MASDC (now AMARC). A civilian life seemed likely when N9059J was reserved for her and on Boxing Day 1978 she was towed across the road to the adjacent Time Aviation yard. Sadly that’s as far as she ever got. A restoration was proposed in 2010 but by then she was seemingly beyond saving. She lingered in what became the Western International yard for a further 11 years but yesterday aged 66 the axe man came for her after her many years in the cold of Alaska and 45 years sitting in the Arizona sun. Sad. My first shot of her in the yard in 1983. 83-gs by dave tompkins, on Flickr Moved further back and by then sitting on her tail, aerial shots I took of the yard including her from 2008 and 2014. Well!, yesterday was a shock to the system, first surprise was a yellow disk thing in the sky which was surrounded by a blue back ground, and then some flying machines made themselves visible....

Brilliant info and graphics, Dave.
You could keep us entertained for years mate...
Now, my February.
Sadly only two in my log today, due only to the fact that my car wouldn’t start this morning and the AA man stating that I should take it out for at least a 30 minute drive to boost the battery... So without stopping and not exiting the car at all, I went up to LHR and logged 2.
G-STBP B777-3 BA 9H-JAI A340 Hi Fly
Thats the trouble with Hybrid cars, the regular battery (12v) runs down very quickly if not run regularly....
Cheers fellas.

Plenty blue skies over Shropshire since Tuesday and not one thing of note to fill them. All I saw where the usual EC135's at very low level. F-GSQN B777 headed west over South Wales on Friday but wasn't trailing so wasn't seen. This is one of the B777's that doesn't do trans Atlantic very often, it has a different seating arrangement.
Lets hope next week is better
