Graham Brown reminded me of this last week so I said I would put something on the Forum.
Myself,Graham and another AFA member keithh along with a load of other enthusiasts and some family members were off to Dulles airport Washington DC to visit an event called Transpo 72,the tour was organised by a couple of guys called Pettit & Thomson who at the time worked for British Caledonian so that's who we flew with from Gatwick (Boeing 707,G-AWWD).We stayed in DC itself for 4 nights before returning to Gatwick onboard BCAL B707 G-AVKA.The cost of this fantastic trip was £93.
There was a lot of excitement as we entered American airspace and the first thing we saw was a Northwest B747 climbing above the clouds on departure from JFK.
We parked up where the biz used to park @ Dulles and it was great to see airliners that we had only seen in books/photos/film etc.In those days Dulles wasn't a busy airport like it is today and only 5 airliners were logged.

After we had checked into our hotel we decided to spent the rest of the day @ Washington National airport and in those days it cost 1$ per person in a taxi to get to the airport,so we all got in a cab and headed off to the airport.Washington National airport was very busy with the largest aircraft being a B727.During the time we were there,we logged 14 biz including BAC 1-11 N503T,58 light/helicopters,other interesting stuff included N200Q Vickers V.786 Viscount,N2NA,N8E,N50UC all Gulfstream 1's & the only non American registered aircraft was G-AZRY Short SC7 Skyvan 3.We logged 122 airliners.

Wow! Dave some beauties in amongst that lot and fly on a 707 in both directions- the only member of the Boeing jet fraternity that I did not fly on. Look forward to the rest of the trip reports. The years certainly flyby. But happy memories. Happy Days Bob

Wonderful memories Dave and like you, I can't quite wrap my head around the fact that this trip of a lifetimes happened half a century ago. I had just turned 16 in the February and had wanted to go to the US for as long as I could remember. I took my "O" levels the week after we came home so did absolutely zero revision and still walked away with six passes so the "travel broadens the mind" concept certainly seems to have paid off.
You have a great memory - I have to say there are chunks of the trip for which I have no recollection although I do of course remember the flight out, landing at Dulles, the mobile lounges, the ride to the hotel, and then us five squeezing in to the cab for the ride to National.

Hi Dave, yes, we were invited into the radar room, if you recall, we satin those huge, comfy chairs up on the mezzanine floor overlooking the aprons and there was a door to our left which would open periodically and blokes would either go in or come out. One of us, either you or Keith I think asked if we could have a look and this kind chap took us up to the radar room.

If you recall Dave, by part way through that second day, we just couldn't keep up with the relentless flow of Eastern, United and American aircraft so I spent half an hour writing down all those we'd seen in numerical order so all we had to do was check the list and if we hadn't seen that one, we added it to the list. Having said that, I remember that we saw very few repeat visits during our time at National.

I found this whilst rummaging around on the web Dave, I can't share the photo but if you scroll down to the third photo on the link, you'll see the now blocked off mezzanine floor where we made camp each day and the huge floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the aprons. Day 3 Thursday 1/6/72
This morning we decided to go somewhere different and as we were planning on going to Dulles on the Friday & Saturday,we settled on Baltimore-Friendship,all I can remember on getting there was the Greyhound bus from DC to the airport,I cannot remember if we got a taxy to the bus station or if it was close enough to walk.
At this time Baltimore like Dulles wasn't the busiest of airports but there were still some goodies to be had,everything logged @ Baltimore were 'N' registered.
We found someone @ one of the FBO's (I think they were called that a long time ago) who gave us permission to walk the long lines of light aircraft etc.

One thing I do recall that the buses that ran between Baltimore & DC were not that frequent so we headed back to DC and to our hotel where we caught a taxi to National and spent the rest of the daylight hours there.

Thanks for bringing back so many memories Dave, what a trip it was, to think we were in the nation's capital, if I recall a shortish walk from the Capitol Building and Washington Monument and we didn't even take the time to go and see them, it must have been the lure of the aircraft. It was very warm for the entire five days but the last day at Dulles was steaming hot, so hot that the organisers brought water bowsers out onto the show area as people were flaking out. Can you remember what we did with our bags whilst we strolled around Dulles that last day? Did we check them in, leave them in lockers or what? I have no idea. Hi Graham,thanks for reminding me of the name of the hotel,I kept thinking it was called Arlington but of course that's the name of the famous cemetery.With regards to the bags,well I'm afraid your guess is as good as mine.As I said yesterday I have been to DC a few times now and have done the touristy bit including a tour of the White House.

Dave, I've posted my log for the final day below. I know you don't do military but apart from the visiting GA, most of what we saw was mil so for Bob and anyone else who's been eagerly reading your logs, here's the final day in full. If you recall, it was the Reds first show in the USA and they totally wowed the crowd.

Hi Dave, yes, we were invited into the radar room, if you recall, we satin those huge, comfy chairs up on the mezzanine floor overlooking the aprons and there was a door to our left which would open periodically and blokes would either go in or come out. One of us, either you or Keith I think asked if we could have a look and this kind chap took us up to the radar room. If you remember, one of the guys actually asked us if we would like to have a look in the radar room and told us to knock the door. They gave a small pamphlet that was a potted history of the airport.

Graham Brown reminded me of this last week so I said I would put something on the Forum. Myself,Graham and another AFA member keithh along with a load of other enthusiasts and some family members were off to Dulles airport Washington DC to visit an event called Transpo 72,the tour was organised by a couple of guys called Pettit & Thomson who at the time worked for British Caledonian so that's who we flew with from Gatwick (Boeing 707,G-AWWD).We stayed in DC itself for 4 nights before returning to Gatwick onboard BCAL B707 G-AVKA.The cost of this fantastic trip was £93. There was a lot of excitement as we entered American airspace and the first thing we saw was a Northwest B747 climbing above the clouds on departure from JFK. We parked up where the biz used to park @ Dulles and it was great to see airliners that we had only seen in books/photos/film etc.In those days Dulles wasn't a busy airport like it is today and only 5 airliners were logged. Great posts Graham. Transpo 72 at Dulles was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Three fatal crashes during the 9 day period of the show. First was a hang glider which was towed aloft by a car too early and got caught in the jet wash of the Blue Angels who were still performing. Second was during one of the air races when N66AN (a Lowers R1) hit the wing of Cassutt N7017 sending the Cassutt spiralling to the ground. The final one was the day after you were there when one of the Thunderbirds Phantoms went out of control during the show. The pilot ejected rather late but got a good chute only for a fireball from the crashed Phantom rising up to melt the chute causing the pilot to plunge the final 200 feet to his death. The Phantom was 66-0321 `3` which you list the previous day. That aircraft had been in the UK with the T`birds the previous year. Graphed most of them but not 66-0321 which was number 7 at Mildenhall and can just be seen behind the rear of No 5 (66-0319) which I took there on 18 June 1971. 71-ap by dave tompkins, on Flickr You show no type for 67-16247, which was another OH6A Cayuse c/n 0632 which became N345SD before crashing in Alaska in June 2002.

Just as a footnote to these great memories, PlaneBase makes it easy to display the various aircraft we saw during these five days by type and location. I won't bother with location after all, it was just three , Dulles, National and Friendship. Here are the airliners we saw by total.

And a final footnote, Dave and Keith, if you recall, my family had moved from Reading to Wiltshire in 1969, I was far from happy about it as I left all my old pals behind. In 1971 the local coach company, Thomas of Calne organised a trip up to the Biggin Hill Air Fair and purely by chance, I bumped into you boys. You mentioned that you were off to Washington for Transpo in May/June 1972 and asked me if I'd like to join you, which of course was a huge "YES".
I was still at school and doing a part time job and although ninety odd quid sounds like a steal these days, fifty years ago for a schoolboy with a part time job, it was rather a lot of money. But I saved and saved, I made a list of my vinyl albums which cost £2 back then and sold a few at school for a quid, and by the following February I had the money.
My parents never had any qualms about letting me go, I'd been travelling by myself on the railways since I was 12 when I went to Leeds to stay with a great aunt. We've all got older of course, and have had wonderful holidays in far off lands but for me, this trip to the US will always be the tops.

I'd totally forgotten about the departure time from Dulles on the way home Keith. 8pm, seven (?) hour flight, then add on five hours, so we would have arrived back at Gatwick around 8am the next day having had zero kip on the flight and not that much whilst we were in Washington. I distinctly remember sleeping for well over 12 hours once I'd arrived home, not that I have the faintest idea how I got home. I imagine it would have been the train to Reading with you guys, then train to Chippenham.
I was also thinking that when I bumped into you and Dave at Biggin Hill in summer 1971, that that would've been the first time I'd seen you since the family moved to Wiltshire in 1969 but of course, we met up for the World Aerobatic Championships at Hullavington in 1970. Again, I haven't a clue how we got out to the airfield.
