Well the nights are drawing in and the weather continues to be indifferent:- Tuesday was a nil result but Wednesday allowed during a brief bit of blue skies before the heavy rain and thunder and lightning arrived for two to enter the log:- N144FE- 767 FDX southbound G-XWBM- A350 BAW south to Heathrow Finished my Grass Roots log and I made a grand total of 148 which included 33 at Popham- so not a bad result for my last proper trip out till next April. Decent hauls all round by the sound of it, for me, the best bit was catching up with old friends some of whom I hadn't seen for ages and the pleasure of just walking around the aircraft. The fact that we didn't get soaked was also a big plus. I made 33 frames including seven of the foreigners there but to be honest, wouldn't have cared how many I made as it was just good to be out and about.
Four frames from home yesterday...

Thursday was my beloved's birthday so it was out to our nieces business in Llangollen for breakfast- then to Llandudno for walk along the front and a go on the slots. Before we went two more hit the books:- N8290V/VN-A876:- 787-10 Vietnam south to Stanstead N944GL- Global southbound. It had been a nice day but ended up being a sad day when we heard that the Queen had passed away- It seems that with a lot of members on this site- she has been in our lives all the time- RIP your Majesty. Happy and Sad Days Bob

Morning Bob, indeed, when I heard on the radio news yesterday morning that just about the entire Royal Family were on their way to Balmoral, then you know it's a real cause for concern. When she received Liz Truss a couple of days ago, I said to Caroline that she looked weak and frail. She must've have missed Philip terribly after being together for so long and maybe, knowing that the Monarchy was in safe hands, just decided it was time to go and be with him.
As you say, she's the only Monarch most of us on here have ever known and I for one will find it hard to becoming accustomed to the fact that we now have a King. I believe Charles will be a good King, he has the lady he's loved all of his life by his side and let's face it, this is the job he's been trained for all of his life. Whether he will serve a few years and then hand the crown over to William remains to be seen, but if that does happen, then I'm sure that William will also be a fine king.
RIP Your Majesty.

Fully agree with your comments Graham- she definitely missed Philip and when we saw her meeting Liz Truss we said that she did look very frail- and listening to the news reports on the radio driving to Llandudno and the family heading up to Scotland- we thought that it did not look good. Sad day- not really a day for aircraft spotting- and the knock-on effect on lots of events will be felt today I feel and although some will not be happy it should be respected. The Horse Racing has been cancelled, along with the golf and I think Football should do likewise. The Piper Fly-in at Halfpenny Green has be cancelled also. Sad Days Bob

A quiet day at home yesterday, the weather was much better than the forecast although that didn't stop us having a couple of torrential downpours during the morning. I made three including the latest Ryanair MAX heading west back to DUB later in the day

Today is "getting ready to go on holiday" day, we have an early AM flight out from BRS tomorrow morning to Rhodes, our first foreign jaunt since 2018 and a return to a beautiful island we've visited three times previously. The island sits at an airspace crossroads, with stuff coming up from the Gulf States heading NW, stuff going back heading SE and then stuff coming over from Turkey heading for mainland Europe as well as other Greek islands so hoping to make a few during our stay.

Morning Bob, that's such bad luck, so sorry to hear that. Let's hope they can reschedule and still get their holiday. When we had to cancel our proposed 2019 trip to Greece, the holiday company did everything they could to get out of coughing up even though we cancelled several weeks prior to the intended departure date and don't even get me going on one of the cottage renting companies who informed us via email that the stay was cancelled yet told us they would keep our money ( we'd paid in full by this time) and would either re-book us somewhere else as soon as Covid permitted or would give us a voucher to be used within twelve months.
I ended up having a right slanging match over the phone with this idiot who reckoned he was "legally entitled to retain our money" but as soon as I told him he would be hearing from our solicitor, the money was back in my account within 30 minutes. Even after that, he couldn't resist having the last word, sent me the world's snottiest, rambling email about how "I didn't understand what the holiday industry is going through" and that he would never accept a booking from us again as it was "people like us" who would ensure that " I will go bust".
He then said in this email that out of 78 properties he had rented out during the same week as we were supposed to be going, it was only us who has asked for their money back ( which I took with a pinch of salt) so I replied and said that he should consider himself lucky then that such a high proportion of customers were willing to let him keep their money.
We learned about six months ago that the rental company he ran had gone bust so I can only assume from that that far more people did actually demand their money back. Either that or his reputation as a shark meant that very few booked with him. I'm not normally a vindictive person but in his case, I'll make an exception.

Graham- Easy jet are letting them swop flights- so just got to try and sort out their hotel in Cyprus- they have been to it about 10 times and the sister hotel in Ayia Napa similar so fingers crossed for them. I know what you mean regarding some travel companies- hotels etc some don't want to know- but the Torquay hotel were great when we cancelled because Jan had Covid- deposit refunded straight away- Leger on the other hand when we cancelled because she was having her treatment was sorry but you will lose your £400 deposit- but you can claim off your holiday insurance- downside we had not got the insurance until we were definitely going. Did not even offer us an alternative holiday- but their loss- as we would never use them again. Anyway have a great holiday- and we shall speak when you get back with hopefully a bulging logbook. Happy Days Bob

LOL, thanks Bob, I'm looking at Rhodes on the VRs as we speak, quite a lot about and quite a few I would make if they come back during our stay. We're staying at a different apartment this time so it's just finding out where the overflights will pass with regard to a close by point of reference as nothing much trails. Most inbounds or outbounds, according to the wind pass quite close to where we're staying.
When we were about to book these particular apartments, Caroline demanded to know where exactly there were; back in 2017 we stayed in Kefalonia at the Ammes apartments at Svoronata, 400 yards from the airport runway threshold, it took her about three days to forgive me, especially when the first Vueling went over the pool at 300ft, but luckily ( for her...) it's not a busy airport.

My last chariot back from Rhodes at dead of night over 40 years ago in 1981 was this 737-200, which was then just over a year old. Daylight on arrival allowed a couple of quick ramp shots including the Olympic 737 SX-BCA which is now preserved at the old closed Athens airport. Behind the Dan Air 727 was a Scanair DC8 and a Laker DC10. ac 395 by dave tompkins, on Flickr ac 393 by dave tompkins, on Flickr ac 394 by dave tompkins, on Flickr

Lovely shots Dave, I never had the pleasure of flying into the old Ellinikon airport but did have a look around quite a few years ago now at the marooned airliners that were left there. The airport at Heraklion in Crete is in much the same dilemma, it's surrounded on all sides by business parks, shopping centres and industrial estates, with the Aegean on its north side, it has nowhere left to expand into and once the airport at Kastelli is operational for civilian flights, then it too will be built over.

Nice day up here in Cheshire Saturday- so a bit of spotting- then cut the grass and took the good lady to meet up with a few of her friends to have a birthday meal- and in between these tasks I made the following helped by Manchester being on 05 again:- HB-AZJ- E195 Helvetic inbound MAN HB-JCI- A220 Swiss inbound MAN OK-FRE- Phenom 100 inbound LPL TC-CRA- 737-8 Pegasus inbound MAN Sunday started off nice with a quick fire three hitting the books but Manchester have changed runway back to 23 so end of the arrivals for me. But LPL currently on 27 so fingers crossed. Happy Days Bob

Nothing was added to the three early additions to the log on Sunday, although it stayed dry- I decided because of the predicted bad weather to do a couple more hours in the garden. Then about 5pm it started to rain. Anyway these are the three I saw:- A9C-FF- 787-9 Gulf inbound MAN ET-AUC- A350 Ethiopian inbound MAN EI-HGF- 737-8200M Ryanair 1st UK flight since its delivery. Monday and it is overcast and raining- LPL are still on 09 and Manchester have gone back to 23 so could be an unproductive day- but never say never. Happy Days Bob

Monday was not a very nice day up here in Cheshire with very low cloud and heavy rain most of the day- but still managed a couple of LPL inbounds before the cloud being that low, even made it difficult to see aircraft landing at Speke, PH-TFU- 737-8 Tui (Netherlands) inbound LPL PH-NCI- Jetstream JS32 AIS Airlines inbound LPL The above both in connection with the LPL v Ajax Champions League game at Big Stand tonight. The weather is supposed to improve today although it has been raining and it is still cloudy- so we shall see. Happy Days Bob

Here we are in Rhodes, flew over in easyJet A321n G-UZME after departing an hour late due to the bag handlers still loading the plane half an hour after we had all boarded. Missed our landing slot at Rhodes, pilot tells us it'll be a two and a half hour wait.Cue massive groans, somehow the pilot/Atc sort something out, we depart an hour late, pilot gets his toe down, tells us we're doing 580mph and we arrive only 25 mins late.
Rhodes airport was quite busy, bags from three flights on carousel 5 when three were vacant so took us 30ins to get our cases after which we then sat boiling on the transfer coach waiting for another late flight.
So, not the best start to our holiday but the apartment is decent, we have air-conditioning, a nice pool and private beach and now I have figured out where the overflights pass, as very little trails, a few are going into the book.

It would appear so Dave, but my brief flirtation with the County of my birth on the Saturday was ok, as it was dry when I visited Popham, although not a lot of visitors and half decent log was made during my last proper trip of the year. But it did help visiting Cranfield, Luton, LAP, Blackbushe, FAB and Oxford as well. Happy Days Bob
