A famous poet whose name escapes me once said that September was "the month we've waited for all summer". Well mate, whoever you are/were, September here in Devizes started just as August ended, cool, wet and blowy and nothing in the book. Thank goodness we are off to Crete soon, eleven days of virtually guaranteed 30c sunshine and a spot right beneath finals for Heraklion airport.

Having scored two blank days on the 1st and 2nd, I finally potted three frames yesterday including two Deltas within five minutes of each other, one heading to, and one from AMS.

Frustrating that a needed C17 failed to trail, and that I couldn’t make out the Air Alaska at the front of its trail, but a few hit the book:
F-HDRA A319 into Biggin Hill F-HESR E145 out of Biggin
both above are Amelia of Slovenia, maybe team transport?
plus EI-TCN DA62 OTT and the inevitable Ryanair Max EI-IHC
and VP-CDJ F2000 OTT N3170B C650 into Biggin

A big fat zero for me yesterday, plenty about but nothing of any interest. Phil's EI-IHC would have been nice as it would have brought me up to date with Ryan's fleet and is based in Brussels I believe so it's first foray to the UK, but about a hundred miles too far east for me.

Another zero yesterday, steaming hot all day as I'm sure it's been everywhere else. We brought a mattress down from one of the spare bedrooms and have slept downstairs in the lounge with the patio doors open. It keeps us and the spaniels much cooler, our house sits on a NW/SE axis, so the sun disappears behind our roof at 6pm ish after which it blazes on the front wall where our bedroom is. It must have been ten degrees hotter upstairs then down and we felt a lot better for it.
Hope everyone's managing to keep as cool as possible.

Two scrapes and a frame yesterday, supposedly driving up to LGW late tonight for an early AM flight to Crete but we have a spaniel who has barely eaten anything since Monday. Two visits to the vet has confirmed that there's really nothing wrong with her, maybe it's the heat suppressing her appetite? The vet has checked her over thoroughly, given her a jab and some appetite stimulant tablets but she just won't eat. She's sat here now, good cold, wet nose but refusing to eat. We had to cancel a trip to Zakynthos four years ago when our other spanner tore his cruciate ligament and the recovery period fell right into our proposed trip. Fingers crossed that she shows some improvement today...

Thanks Dave, it's a worry to say the least. Our dog sitter is very capable and I'm sure she'd be fine with our pooch but she's Caroline's "baby" and she doesn't want to fly out knowing she's not eating. But, the vet has said "nothing wrong with her" after checking heart, chest, stomach, rear end and everything else. It's a mystery for sure.

We arrived in Crete yesterday to find a welcoming breeze and mere temperatures of 27c. Plenty on the deck at Kazantzakis but we parked at the far eastern end of the apron and were on the wrong side of the Cobus to see anything as it ferried us to the terminal.
Went to see a dear old friend yesterday afternoon who promptly started serving the raki and the rest, as they say, was a blur.
Didn't wake till 10am today, blue skies, fresh offshore breeze and inbounds going over our apartment at 2700ft. Life is good.

A quick check in from Crete's northern coast. Plenty of airline traffic into Heraklion, plenty of OTTs, trailing some days but not always and a few nice surprises including an HZ registered DA42, a 4X registered C172 and a USAF KC135 that departed from Souda this morning, then flew straight along the coast and right by us, I needed it too.

Well, the HZ DA42 and the 4X C172 were well and truly trumped yesterday. An ATR72 was approaching so I took no notice as I don't need any Greek registered ones but took a glance at the VR to see it was Bangkok Airways HS-PGB. It had come from Erzulum in Eastern Turkey, overnighted in Heraklion and continued on its way to Prague this morning.

Just the one on Wednesday. 84+54 CH53 inbound for fuel at Biggin Hill.
Apparently on departure for Shawbury the crew didn’t like the weather and returned for more Biggin hospitality.

Yesterday was miserable all day, low cloud, driving rain and zero hope of seeing anything more than 500ft high. Today has started very unexpectedly grand, clear blue skies but very nippy at just 7c. The forecast was for showers and cloud so rather pleased that for once, the weather guys have got it wrong in our favour.

This came my way (South Staffs) this morning, from the west presumably out of Shawbury, turning south as it passed us no doubt heading to BH. Showing GAF888 on ADS-B, fortunately someone got a nice clear shot of it and posted it on a local FB group.

Well, having successfully avoided Covid for three and a half years, home tests yesterday showed beyond doubt that the good lady and I have finally succumbed to it. There was a chap coughing and spluttering all the way home from Crete last Tuesday, two rows behind us so more than likely that it came from him.
Seems to manifest itself as a severe head cold, running eyes, rasping cough, a runny nose and total lack of energy so we won't be heading back to work tomorrow.
Yesterday however weather wise was a lovely day and these were all seen from home.
