Hi Graham,
So you literally have a list of numbers, say line numbers for the Boeing 777 0001 - 1300 or whatever, and then next to the number log where & when seen ?, so how do you know what Registration you have seen it as ?, I only ask because, I am looking at trying to sort my mess of logging out and am constantly amazed by people on this, and on other forums, that can say " and yes I saw that at such and such in, the year dot as.... ". I can understand Jerry and your point of listing them in registration order, that is what I am doing at the moment, but it would be useful to know which frames I've seen.
Cheers
Adrian

Hi Adrian, yes, I have the Excel con number spreadsheets with "con number", "type" (e.g. A320-214), "reg", "operator" and "date seen". So, I log the frame with the tail number that I initially see it carrying, and then, if I subsequently see the frame again maybe in five years time working for a new owner, I'll add " re registered as *****.

Cant you just sort by the reg column then con as opposed to the other way round ?

With that Jeff, the reg might change several times over the number of years that the specific frame is in service. If I do see a frame for the second time, third or whatever and it has a new reg, I will add, "seen as *****" and the date seen.

More or less the same as me then Bob. Yes, but mine are just plain word files. that I keep updated. OK as long as you keep it up-to-date, but took a long time to enter it all in the beginning. (842 777s (no dots)). Yes, always a few at LHR . . .

There is a free program called panebase2, if you download it and talk to their admin they can transfer your excel into the planebase database, regular updated on airliners, mil, biz jets/props and Ga upto twice weekly will result in you always having an upto date database.

Excel makes it so much easier to move stuff around, that's why I prefer it to Word

Ok, so in both examples, say in Grahams spreadsheet A320 c/n 69 which you saw with Lufthansa at LHR, say in 5 years time it goes to Iberia, would you then make a new line for c/n 69 or put a new registration in column J ?
The other thing with Captain Bob's list, if I am reading it correctly is that you have created a line per airframe, and added disposal details, sort of a mini production list, which I would find useful, but what is putting me off doing it this way is if I made a spreadsheet with 6000 plus odd lines to represent every A320 / 321 etc built, and then add columns for where and when seen, obviously I am not going to see them all, so that leaves me with hundreds of blank lines on a huge spreadsheet, but conversely if I only list the ones I have see, such as in Grahams example, I don't get the benefit of being able to keep track of re - registrations, aircraft fates etc !!
Unless I have one spreadsheet such as Captain Bob's where I can keep track of production, and one such as Grahams where i only list the airframes that I have seen
Thanks for the input guys !!
Cheers
Adrian

Hi Adrian, if I saw that frame with it's new tail number, I would just add "seen as EC-ABC" and enter the date on the same line as the original reg that I saw that frame as. I wouldn't change the reg by which I saw the frame first time around. That's the advantage of using frame numbers rather than tail numbers. I saw a Smart Lynx A320 a couple of days ago, I'd already seen the frame some time ago with a previous operator so I just added, " seen as YL-***" in column "J" and added the date. And of course, I just add each frame's c/n as I see it, I don't make a full production list for each type.

Planebase adds the new reg to the logged sighting, keeping original date and reg of sighting and new one

Adrian Adrian Mine is a simplified production list. C/n and CURRENT registration or fate. I ONLY do frames, so no need to record multiple sightings. If you want to simplify it further, do what I do but only for the frames you've seen. I do that for Turboprops (millions that I shall never see!) Bob

Hadn't realised what an interesting conversation I would create! Graham, I have now created new pages on the a Boeing and Airbus spreadsheets in current registration rather than serial order, but it means every change has to be made twice, easy to forget.
I have nothing against huge spreadsheets (my bizjet sheet has over 22,000 lines and 9 columns) as long as the computer can open them quickly which at present it can.
As I have mentioned before, I distinguish by colour registrations I have read off (grey), seen clearly (green), seen as dots on the end of a trail (yellow) and seen as strobes (blue) so my spreadsheets are colourful. The first column of registrations is always that currently worn or last worn before its demise (whether I have seen it or not), I update these monthly fron Aviation Letter. Further columns show other registrations I have seen on that frame, working left to right for most recent to oldest. Thus as an example for 747 27134 it reads
27134 4/412BCF 981 12/12/1993 B-2453 B-KAH* 9V-SMS* S Marana
The asterisk shows I have see it with that reg, I have nor seen it with its current reg B-2453. 9V-SMS is grey, B-KAH is green. I do not normally record where seen or the current owner, but can often remember!
But whatever works for you!

That's an interesting take on it Jerry. Like the spotting itself, it seems we all have varying methods for recording our sightings. Jeff's Plane Base programme sounds interesting. I've been meaning to look at it for ages.

Our cleaning lady comes on Wednesday and I like to keep out of her way, so I went to AJ Aviation (formerly The Aviation Hobby Shop) and then to Farnborough. Another good decision, made 9H-FDV EMB.505, 9H-VCK BD.350, 9H-VJK GLEX, 9H-YOU CRJ.200, D-AHOX EMB.135, EC-MHZ Gulf 650, HB-JKL F.2000LX, N83M Gulf 550, N525KF Gulf 550, N588ZJ GLEX, N883DA Lear 60,OE-HUG BD.350, SE-DIZ C.560XL, TC-MMM F.7X and TC-SGO F.2000EX. Called in at Fairoaks on the way home, made N138CM PA46 and OE-EGO PC12, also saw 2-GOOD PA32 but a little research showed I had seen this frame as N4178W.

Graham, I use Planebase - now Planebase 3 v1.4. I think that there is a temporary stop on new users while they clear out non- active users. It is totally free, with at least weekly updates for the 3 elements (Military, Gen Av, Airline/exec). Once a year there is a voluntary donation exercise, but well worth it in my mind. They do offer to help upload existing databases etc - just a pity for me that all my records have been paper based, so the 25000+ records that I have input manually so far have taken some while! I am a big fan of the progam and the team that own / support it. If they reopen membership, I would recommend that you have a serious look. Cheers Phil

And so ends a month of unremitting cloud cover. Managed one today,A40-DA A330 of Oman on the WY104 (now have A-H, don't think I or J has visited LHR so far) but needed A6-EUA A380 just went overhead above the cloud on the EK6. Hoping for better in July!
