After traveling down to Newton Abbot yesterday to watch our local team get beaten in the F.A.Vase second round, it was back to something a bit more reliable today ( Spotting ) with a moderate eleven hitting the books.

A nice sunny start to the day has enabled one scrape to go into the book:
D-ATYF B767 Condor (operating an Eurowings flight)
It has now clouded over so not expecting to see anything else today.

Today was just like yesterday, lovely sunny start then the cloud had arrived by lunchtime, however the following were logged:
D-AXGF A330 Eurowings D-IOHL Cessna 525A Citationjet 2 M-AZIA Cessna 525C Citationjet 4 G-CFLV Saab 2000 Eastern (been after this one for ages)
Also seen but not needed and both heading north:
F-WXWB A350 D-AVXB A321NEO
and now a request,at approx 09.40 a Global Express went across at approx FL400 heading west to east,on FR24 it showed a squawk of 4740 and nothing at all on Planefinder (it really has been rubbish lately),anyone able to put an id to this please?

David,
As you are looking at inadequate sites, it is not surprising that no information was showing.
FR24 and PlaneFinder are OK for the general public, but are no use to us enthusiasts because they (and Flightaware) are subject to FAA BARRing. This means that most US (in particular) bizjets will have their identities withheld - at the owners request - and also some non-US ones. The same applies to virtually all military flights on these sites.
Use the free ADS-B Exchange instead. It is not subject to BARRing and will show you what you want.
Regards,
Bob

Bob,
I find the best compromise is to run both Planefinder and ADS-B and switch between them.

Can't be bad, Phil. At least you are running ADS-B which is the key one to use.
Personally, I use a combination of Planeplotter and ADS-B - but that is a matter of personal choice. Being interested in military almost exclusively, I find that these two complement each other extremely well, as they seem to have a different set of sharers. Surprisingly often, I find aircraft on one that is not showing on the other - and vice versa. This includes both civil and military aircraft.
The matter of FAA BARR-ing is not that well known amongst the UK civil spotters (except the "also keenly military") and deserves to be highlighted, However, it is perhaps unfortunate that people seem to be unwilling to change to something which will give them what they want.
Regards,
Bob

I have Planefinder with a view covering Maidenhead in the west to the Thames Estuary, Luton down to Gatwick. ADS-B I keep with a view that is broadly the M25. ADS-B times out through inactivity more quickly than Planefinder, but is also much more up to date with new identities, and definitely shows more military. Where Planefinder sometimes just shows a hexcode, ADS-B usually has the up to date reg. I do find that ADS-B can sometimes flick a location backwards in time, so I am looking for something that has already passed. Planefinder then shows me the true location. So definitely best used in combination.

Yes, I use FR24 and PlaneFinder but recently have found the latter no longer shows many biz. Was not familiar with ADS-B but switched it on a few minutes ago and it immediately showed 75-0558 E3 which was not on the other two sites.Have saved it as a favourite.
Just two for me today before it clouded over, A6-EOY A380 heading for BHX (thought I had this but no recorded sighting on the spreadsheet, now have all up to EUF) and PH-BHH 789 returning to AMS from Rio. Cloud arrived just before D-AINA 320neo Lufthansa headed north to MAN on LH942, first visit of type?

Definitely thumbs up, Jerry.
ADS-B Exchange is so much better. I agree with Phil's remark that you sometimes get "residual" (i.e. outdated) plots, but I suspect that is more to do with individual sharers not keeping their SBS (or whatever) to the correct time.
Regarding the E-3 75-0558 (as indicated), it may well not be that serial. Last time it was in the 'Hall (21 Sept 2016), it was using the hex code of 75-0557!! See my Mildenhall trip thread.
Cheers,
Bob

Funny how some registrations remain in ones memory...
I've been putting all of my logs into ADU for the past 2 years... Yesterday I was working on 1988 but during the day I too saw N375G going OTT... I knew for a fact I'd seen it before from memory - but wasn't sure if it was this one... On checking I had seen the Global before... But last night working on the old logs what do I come across, 2nd Sept 1988, none other than N375G CL601....
Some reggies just won't die!!!
Cheers lads.

Hi Bob and Dave,
ADSB is a quality vehicle. Must admit I tend to use FR24 on my mobile devices as my first choice, think I prefer the graphics... However, once you see a biz or military ADSB stands out on its own... I sometimes have issues with the display on my iPad but at that point I tend to shut it down and start again, that normally does the trick.
The other thing I like about ADSB is that you can filter the display to just show military aircraft... when I'm in the military mode that cuts a lot of clutter out...
Cheers fellas.
Bill

..and to confirm, today ADS-B allowed me to see 013 C295 Polish, 54+04 A400 GAF and 64-14834 Nacho 82 KC135 whereas Planefinder had none of them. Shame I only needed the A400.

Thanks to all who have responded to my post regarding usage of ADS-B Exchange. I'm glad to have improved the monitoring experience of some of you, at least.
As a follow up to an earlier post of mine, the E-3 was actually 75-0557, i.e. not as indicated by its hex code.

Bob

..but even ADS-B has failed to identify the RAF A109 that headed from Kent towards Central London at 15.25 - is this 8FLT and not to be mentioned?

Don't forget, Phil, that most of the military will be plotted through MLAT (mode-s rather than ADS-B) and you need a sufficient number of sharers uploading the plane's data in order to be able to "triangulate" and plot its position. It might appear on the list but not be plotted if the sharers are not quite sufficient in number.
Also relevant is the height of the aircraft. The lower level the aircraft, the less likely it will be for a sharer to pick it up.
By the way, 8 Flt is now 658 Squadron (since 01/09/2013) following its expansion. Their Dauphins do show up on ADS-B, provided they have their mode-s switched on!!.
Cheers,
Bob

Played around with ADS-B today, picked up quite a few military including 54+04 A400 German AF and a V22 and 2 F15s of USAF, but no C5s, C17s or KC135s. DIsplay not as good as FR24, but did seem to pick up most biz. Will be using it in future.
Made just 2 today, A7-BFJ 77F heading for LUX and Latest Vueling A320 EC-MNZ inbound LHR. Missed what might have been the first Portugalia E190 to visit LHR, CS-TPO.

I don't think I've used PlaneFinder now for ages, and I use FR24 infrequently and although I subscribe to PlanePlotter on both my PC and mobile, it can be very frustrating as so many aircraft don't show a reg, or if they do, often that reg can be years out of date. The plots on PP dance around all over the place, and despite the owners insisting that all users run NTP to keep their PC clocks accurate, it's obvious that many sharers don't bother. I think it was either Jeff or Bill who told me about ADSB Exchange a while ago and I use it almost exclusively now, on both PC and mobile. Very handy indeed if I'm out with the dogs and a chopper or two goes over, which they frequently do. If it had a replay function ( which I don't think it does currently) it would be nigh on perfect.

First military success for me on ADS-B, 10-5714 C130J which went overhead a few minutes ago at FL200. Just one other today, ES-SAM A320 of Smartlynx Estonia routing Tallin-Tenerife.
Don't find the graphics on ADS-B good on the I-pad, will try it shortly on the desktop.

Cracking start to the day weather wise but the predicted cloud has now arrived but 7 in the book:
N193LA Global Express 6000 N14NA Falcon 900B PH-EXG Embraer 170 KLM Cityhopper PH-GUV B737 Transavia YL-LCT A320 Smart Lynx M-MAVP Global Express 6000 N7223Y Beech 58 Baron
Don't expect to get anything else today with the weather forecast as it is and also off to the Mad Stad later on to watch the mighty Royals take on Burton Albion.
Have a great weekend all.
