You can tell we're edging closer to Christmas as the supermarkets are all full of Easter eggs....

Me and the wife went shopping in Basingstoke yesterday and I jokingly said to her that this time next month all the Christmas lines would be on show, but no,Debenhams had them on display already and according to one of the shop assistants have been since mid August,F*** me,it gets earlier every year.

It's crazy Dave, just one enormous and relentless commercial attack upon the consumer these days. Our Morrisons here in town already has Christmas cards for sale.

Working in Gloucestershire today. Spent an hour at Fairford waiting for the pea souper to lift, only to reveal a barren field so off to Staverton and Nympsfield, where I made 12 and 17 resoectively, logs on the Staverton sub forum. Also made four so far from home.

Visited a few different places hunting for a few military aircraft. Yesterday was the FAST museum for XZ166 Lynx😀
Today I left home at 6.30 for Sywell via...
Badgers Mount
I was after XV731 my penultimate Wessex, but only XR502 was outside.
Upminster Paintball - 2 of my last 11 Lynx are here (for now- soon to be moved on to different paintball sites)
Lynx XZ698/316 (boom of ZD249) XZ690/640 XZ606/O ZD278/F XZ645😀 XZ612 XZ723/672 XZ177😀 ZD565/404 Jaguar XX739 XX369
Made a couple at Damyns Hall without getting out of the car!
Then to Sywell- disappointing but still worth the visit. Then tried Barby to find another Lynx I need. Unfortunately the paintball place/farm was gated. There was an intercom but I decided to try again another day. So that was a waste of time, but actually helped me out- as I arrived at my next stop, Brize Norton, my last RAF C.17 landed (ZZ176)😀. If I hadn't wasted time on the way there, I would have missed it! (Also saw ZZ171, ZZ177, ZZ333,ZZ343, ZM403 but none needed) Last stop was Fairford for the B.52 which I needed. Might need one of the B1s - need to check.
So a fairly successful day on the whole. Didn't see anyone from AFA at Sywell- maybe next time

Regarding Badgers Mount, did you view from both sides of the hedge? One Wessex can be seen as you drive up from Sundridge / Dunton Green, i.e. towards M25 Jct4. The other two are best seen by starting to walk along the footpath the other side of the hedge; you only need to go 50 yards or so to get a decent view.

Thanks for the advice- sounds like I may need to back! I pulled into a lane that led to what looked like a house and a builders yard. One complete Wessex was easily visible (XR502). I scrambled up a rubble bank, and tried driving down the lane a little way but couldn't see any sign of any other helicopter. I didn't want to make a nuisance of myself, especially at 8.00 on a Saturday morning! when you say walk along the footpath, do you mean along the main road towards the garden centre? i would really like to see this (XV731), then I would need to go to Wales to find my last British Wessex! thanks

Well finally checked off my Sywell list- made 63 new frames- not bad seeing the weather turned rubbish and with the 6 made elsewhere a grand total of 70 for the weekend includes the Gulf 5 today. Few nice gap fillers included including the Cub G-AKRA and the Breighton based Luton Minor G-ATCN and the Swife G-LCGL were also nice- so won't have to join the club there to see them two. The Do27 G-BMFG at Tatenhill was nice also. So all in all a good end to the years trips apart from my R & R holiday in Cyprus but that will be Sunbathing, eating and drinking and of course hopefully the odd overflight. So it's Football, Football, Football all the way now until my first trip planned for 2017 (International weekend) fingers crossed in March. Happy Days Bob

Hi ZZ, From where you parked, you would need to go back onto the main road and turn left towards the garden centre, then turn left on foot onto a public footpath. If the link below from Flickr works, you should see the view you should expect. Cheers Phil Badgers Mount Wessex1_2 by p&jstevens, on Flickr

But no rush otherwise, as I'm not sure when I'll next be over in Kent. many thanks Jeff - the 2 Wessex in the photo are XV722 at the front and XV731 (my penultimate British Wessex) at the back. The other one definitely still there is XR502 that I saw on Saturday.

Weather not in my good books, today. It prevented me from having a chance of making seven - 1 x KC-10, 2 x C-5s, 1 x C-17, 1 x Navy C-40 (twice!!) and two Merlins.

The other one definitely still there is XR502 that I saw on Saturday. OK, form where you parked to see the solo Wessex, walk to the road, turn left towards the garden centre and walk 144 yards (probably on the other side where there is a pavement). When you reach a set of gates on your right, and 10 yards before the only tall tree on the left, there is a stile leading to a signposted public footpath. Take that footpath, and walk close to the hedgerow. After about 50 yards there is a gap through which you can see both Wessex(es?) which are still in situ as per the photo.
Good luck with that and you other remaining UK Wessex. Cheers Phil

Wow thanks Phil, that's great! (Although annoying that I didn't see them at the weekend!)
But thanks again for looking and letting me know!
Cheers
the other Wessex I need is XM300 which is apparently stored at Nantgarw near Cardiff. There is very little info about this one's location!

Thanks Graham That's great as well!
Not sure if it's visible as it's listed as stored, but if I get chance to head that way, I can try getting in touch in advance.
Many thanks to both of you
In case it's not obvious, I'm trying to finish off a few British military.
So while we're at it, does anyone know anything about my last Sea King, ZH544 ? Did it end up at Sultan? If so, is it outside? Or did it go abroad for spares?
Thanks !

Hi zz,
ZH544 ended up in store at HMS Sultan. The Scramble database has it noted there in March 2016.
There was a trip organised by the Herts Aviation Society on 29th March 2016, but I haven't seen a list - just a few photos (not a single yellow Sea King). There was a comment that there were nearly 20 complete Sea Kings in a separate hangar (off limits) awaiting sale, and inferred that 6 of those were yellow ones in a line.
Regards,
Bob

Thanks for that Bob
Interesting to know that it was still at Sultan in March this year.
I understood it, and other ZH... Sea Kings were due to go to Norway for spares use at the end of last year. I think the others went, but there seems to be confusion as to whether '544 went or not...,
Ive been on a few Sultan tours- if I find out that my last Sea King is still there, then I'll have to do another!
Annoyingly, '544 was at RIAT a few years ago at the weekend, but not when I was there on the Friday!
Cheers

It should be inside the main transport hall ZZ, as far as I can see, this place acts as an outside storage place for all the stuff that isn't being currently displayed in other museums. museum.wales/collections-centre/

That's great thanks Graham. Having read that page, it specifically says the tours include the helicopter.
Not sure when I can get there, but thank you (and Phil again)
